"WORLD TRAVELERS"

JUDGED BY STEVE MCCURRY

*HONORABLE MENTION

“Every so often a portrait stops you in your tracks – the result of a profound connection between subject and photographer –

and this is one such example.

Betina’s framing of a man from her travels in Varanasi, India, is direct and confident, her slightly dropped viewpoint placing the power with her subject – this man whose features are delicately highlighted against the darkness behind. It feels intimate and special, a small moment that momentarily halts you on a whirlwind journey through a new place.”

“THE HUMAN BODY”

JUDGED BY ROGER BALLEN.

*HONORABLE MENTION

“Betina evokes the body without showing us one – this drying shirt suspended like outstretched arms, bright against the dark, worn wall. There is something almost spiritual, like a cross held aloft, or a modest symbol of purity, a ghost of innocence past. This once grand building now slowly crumbles, nothing more than a useful fixing point for a washing line. It’s one of those wonderful moments of nothingness that, with such assured execution, takes on something profound. An idea just out of reach for the viewer to ponder.”

"AN INSTANT"

JUDGED BY CLÉMENT SACCOMANI

SECOND PRIZE, LIFE FRAMER.

“Street photography is always a complicated game, and the eye must rid itself of prejudices.

Here, the eye strolls at the same speed as that of a passerby, like a glance at the moment of life”

– Clément Saccomani, Jan. 2018
